Under direction of the Superintendent of Public Works, performs and takes the lead over one or more employees engaged in the performance varied mechanical work involved in the inspection, repair, maintenance, fabricating and servicing all vehicles and equipment utilized in the Borough, including, but not limited to, police vehicles, fire apparatus, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, including diesel, street sweepers, loaders, tractors, plows, salt spreaders, mowers and saws.   

Candidates must have the ability to perform highly skilled and complex mechanical repairs on all vehicles and equipment identified herein; train, instruct and evaluate personnel in use of shop equipment and performance of mechanical repairs; perform computer diagnostics on gasoline and diesel powered vehicles; inspect equipment and set maintenance and repair schedules; perform welding, brazing and cutting; adjust, repair and replace parts in engines, transmissions, differentials, air brakes, hydraulic systems and other equipment; and maintain an inventory of commonly used parts and supplies.  Candidates must be able to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, in all weather and working conditions.  Candidates must have the ability to learn various types of electronic and computer equipment utilized in the Borough.   

Applicants must have successfully completed one year of training in automotive technology at an accredited community college or vocational school and have at least three years of varied experience in the maintenance and repair of various types of motor vehicles and construction equipment.  Applicants are required to possess minimum Class B NJ CDL license with Air Brake endorsement.  Candidates may be required to obtain a valid certification as an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician, Emissions Repairer Technician, Motor Vehicle Inspector and/or obtain ASE Certification in Suspension and Steering, Brake Repairs, Engine Repair A-1 and/or Engine Performance A-8.  Applicants must be legally permitted to work in the United States and 18 years of age or older.  Applications can be obtained in Borough Hall or send resume with salary history to Bryan A.
