Mayor Shaw has spent much of his adult life working in the service of children and adults in need. He has worked for a home energy assistance program serving clients in need of assistance with keeping their homes heated, water running and electricity turned on.  Many of his clients commented on his personable manner and the level of respect he displayed for every client.

Next Mayor Shaw served as the Associate Director of Community Services for a non-profit family development and social service agency.  This was a dream job because it gave him an opportunity to outreach into the community, facilitating programs such as recreation and sports, welfare to work, automotive and technical training, G.E.D. assistance, senior citizen assistance and renter’s aide, among others.  Running these programs was only possible through his diligence and expertise in overseeing a $2 million budget.  He eventually ascended the ranks to becoming Deputy Director of the organization, a proud moment in his professional career.

Mayor Shaw has served as a mentor throughout the Borough, having worked with young men as a Pop Warner football coach and with the local high school’s gang intervention program.  Affectionately known as Coach D., his workshops gave young men at risk for gang involvement a platform to air their fears and concerns.  Through his no-nonsense approach and honest attitude, he informed these young men of the harsh realities that await anyone who chooses to embark on the road to gang life.  School officials cited marked academic and behavioral improvements in several of the young men who participated in his workshops.  Donald continues to follow up with those young men directly and through their parents who also seek his counsel.

From 2012 to 2020, Mayor Shaw served as the first Borough of Roselle Recreation Leader, leading staff in the organization of borough-wide recreation events, management of cultural and recreational programs and summer camp. His work in recreation has garnered awards and recognition throughout the county and state. This summer, he transitioned to the Union County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Mayor Shaw serves on the boards and as a member of several non-profit, community service organizations. Mayor Shaw’s life has followed one motto, one belief – “I give because I have been given.” His goals as Mayor are to demonstrate unity, respect and partnership in local government as he works toward building a stronger Roselle. He has hit the ground running, and looks forward to continuing to serve the needs of the residents.

In addition to his obligations to his job and the Roselle community, Mayor Shaw is a dedicated father of two and husband.
